 The Notre Dame football team will open up Fall camp this year at Culver Military Academy.  Taking a page out of Lou Holtz' book, the Irish will have 5 practices there just like they did in 1995 and 96.  The Irish will be at CMA on August 4th.  They'll come back to campus and have their first workout at home August 9th.

Indiana Thunder win 12U World Series

  Congratulations to the Indiana 12U softball team, Indiana Thunder!  They won the NSA World Series tonight in Crown Point over the Capitol City Chaos of Illinois.  Caitlin Traxler and Lauren Sandor were the pitching stars while Erin Coffel had 4 triples and 2 home runs in the tourney.  The kids are from Granger, Osceola, Bremen and Elkhart.  Awesome job!

Disc Golf Tourney coming to South Bend August 2nd

A week from Saturday, there is a big disc golf tournament coming to South Bend. It's called the Bacon Classic and organizers are using it to help fund improvements to the course in South Bend. The Doubles Tournament is August 2nd. It's only $40 for a team and you get 2 rounds of 18 holes. They'll start registration at 7:30 with tee time around 9 am. Notre Dame field turf being laid down in the stadium

 Notre Dame football began in 1887. Going into their 127th year of playing, they've been on artificial turf, field turf and even astro turf.  But never at home. To some, it would be like Knute Rockne wearing a wig.  For others, it's long overdue.  The announcement to eliminate real grass came at the Blue Gold game in April.  Monday was the first time we got to see the fake stuff in the Stadium.

Anna Rohrer and Ashleigh Macleod honored by Mishawaka

 Mishawaka Senior to be Anna Rohrer was honored tonight by the Mishawaka town council for winning another state and national championship.  She was joined by the 800 state champ, freshman Ashleigh Macleod from Penn.  Anna Rohrer said,  "It's really nice to know that no matter where I'm competing that I'm not alone, that all over the place people are watching.  Especially in Mishawaka."

Silver Hawks flying high in 2nd half

 They already clinched a playoff spot, but they haven't gotten satisfied in the 2nd half of the season.  Going into today, the Silver Hawks were tied with West Michigan for the top spot in the East in the 2nd half.  The Benders are now 19-11 after winning an afternoon game against Peoria.

The South Bend Silver Hawks took care of the Peoria Chiefs 6-0. Starting Pitcher Markus Solbach threw a complete game shutout. Marty Herum hit a two-run homer. Fidel Pena had an RBI triple and is now hitting .583 since rejoining the club.

 Saturday in Elkhart you have a chance to see Denver Bronco's receiver Nathan Palmer playing his music. Horan wins 18th St. Joe County Metro

 For 87 years, the ladies in St. Joe County have been teeing it up to find out who is the best.  This years president happened to be the 17 time and reigning champion.  Lori Horan not only golfed, but she had to pick up all the trophies this morning that were just finished in time for the ceremony.  Horan shot a final round 83 to win the championship.

Andrew Velasquez on base streak ends at 74

 Andrew Velasquez was already the record holder for all of minor league baseball.  No player in the history of the Minors had ever gotten on base 74 games in a row.  Tonight he was trying to get closer to the record that was posted by Ted Williams in the majors in 1949.  That number was 84.   He went 0-4 and failed to reach first base for the first time since April 22nd of this season.  The Hawks won the game 6-3.

Julia Potter wins her 3rd Indiana Am Championship

 Granger's Julia Potter went into Thursday's final round of the Indiana Amateur with a 3 shot lead.  She shot a record 29 on the front 9 at Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello.  And she shot the course record 67 for 18.  Potter won the Amateur by 7 strokes.  Potter said,  "I just realized that I just need to keep it together and I should be able to walk away with the championship."

 FOX 28's Adam Shear and Dean Huppert were honored to play golf in the Kosciusko County "Tools for Schools" outing today.  It's annually the biggest outing of the year and we got to play with State Champion Chris Hanson and the Mayor of Warsaw, Joe Thallmer.  The round was played at Rozella Ford which has made some tremendous improvements under the leadership of Jeff Schumaker.

Velasquez extends streak to 74 games in a row on base

 Andrew Velasquez had gotten on base a minor league record 73 times in a row.  The all-time professional baseball record is held by Ted Williams who got on 84 games in a row in 1949.  Wednesday Velasquez got hit by a pitch and later tripled.  He went 1-3.  So he does make it to 74 games in a row.  10 away from the Ted Williams' record.  Unfortunately the Silver Hawks lost the game 3-1.

  Notre Dame recruit Brianna Turner from Texas was named the Gatorade National Player of the year.  She said, "said,  "What makes this award unique is it's not just athletics.  It's oh she scored 20 points or she got 10 rebounds but this award talks about academics and character so that is what makes this award so unique."

Horan continues to lead St. Joe Women's Metro

 The St. Joe County Women's Metro moved on to Erskine Golf Club for a very windy second round of golf today..    17 time champ Lori Horan continued her dominance Tuesday in the St. Joe County Women's Metro golf tournament.  On 17 she hits the green just like you are supposed to on the par 3.   She's at 156 and leads Sharon Wiseman by 13 strokes and Rachel Thompson by 14.

Buckner said about winning the world series, "I'm probably better off that we didn't"

 Bill Buckner made one All Star game in his 22 years.  He had over 2,000 hits.  But it was that one play that went between his legs in the World Series for Boston that everyone remembers.  Tuesday he was at Grace College speaking to the 10U and 13-U baseball players of the BPA World Series.  He said,  "Hey, I wish we would have won the world series, but... I.. I'm probably better off that we didn't.  I learned a lot of valuable life lessons".

Silver Hawks star Velazquez relieved to break record

Sunday afternoon, South Bend shortstop Andrew Velazquez broke the on-base streak record in the minor leagues, by reaching at least first base in 72 straight games. FOX28 was the only local station in Ft. Wayne after the game to talk to the Silver Hawks star about a moment that will go down in baseball history. Velazquez hit a single in the second inning of a 10-7 win to break the record.

 Jeff Samardzija was good enough to play in the Major League All Star game on FOX next Tuesday, but the trade made him a victim of circumstances.  He will still be part of the event.  He'll be introduced at his first All Star game.  He just won't be able to pitch.  Samardzija said,  "Yeah it's really different.   So we're just gonna kind of wing it.  See what happens.  Most of all enjoy the festivities of being a first time all star.

We've been tracking this streak for about 3 weeks.  South Bend shortstop Andrew Velasquez has gotten on base 66 consecutive games.  Velazquez said, "I just want to keep doing what I'm doing."  The current minor league on-base record is held by both Kevin Youkilis and Kevin Millar at 71 games.  Red Sox Hall of Famer Ted Williams set professional baseball's all-time record of 84 straight games.

Bethel hires Wodrich for women's basketball

 Bethel has announced the replacement for Women's basketball coach Jody Martinez.   Andrew Wodrich is a Mishawaka grad and played for the Pilots for 2 seasons.  He got his coaching experience in AAU and with Western Michigan University as an assistant in 2010 and 2011.  Then he moved on to Central Michigan and helped the Chippewas win the Mac Tourney in 2013 and the MAC season Championship this past season. It's the first coaching change in 16 years at Bethel.

Oh, that's great to know, thank you. So it was really eye opening and it just made me realize that basketball can be taken away in a split second."

Baer Field Raceway in Ft. Wayne closes

   A race track in Ft. Wayne has shut it's doors for the season.  Baer Field opened in 1963.  The track owner Tom Isch retired 2 years ago and Jon Raney took it over.   Raney told the News Sentinel, "I don't want to go through this anymore.  The main problem is the decline of attendance.  and a lot of that is due to the racers tearing down the place on social media."

Northridge grad Nate Ritchie accepts preferred walk on offer from IU basketball

Northridge high school's Nate Ritchie had offers to play hoops at Toledo and Air Force but he's chosen to be a preferred walk on with  Tom Crean and Indiana.  He told FOX 28's Adam Shear, "this is seriously a dream come true" to play for his favorite school.  He averaged over 23 points a game, shot 60% from the field and 83% from the line.  He's 6'7" and versatile.  He does have great ups and will add athleticism, even as a walk on.

Eberhart Petro golf course has a number of trees on the course that winds it's way along the St. Joe river.  Fortunately, there was little damage after the big Monday night storm.  Golf Pro Drew Roop told FOX 28 there were only a couple of big branches down and the course is looking as good as it ever has.

Clay Yeo transfers from Valpo to Bethel basketball

Clay Yeo won 2 state championships at Triton.  He was an Indiana All Star and averaged 4 points a game as a freshman at Valparaiso University.  Monday he signed to play at Bethel after transferring from the Crusaders program.  Since he will be playing at the NAIA level, he will be able to play right away for Mike Lightfoot's Pilots.

After already striking out twice, Silver Hawks outfielder Stryker Trahan was not necessarily comfortable at the plate in the bottom of the 11th with the bases loaded and two outs. Tomorrow is going to be the biggest day so far for the "Play for Jake Foundation"  There is a sold out golf outing in LaPortre that will help their mission to help get low cost EKG's in schools.  The IHSAA and Indianapolis Colts have jumped on board.  Nobody wants to see another situation like Jake West who died at football practice last fall.   Julie Schroeder said,  "Simply amazing. There has not been one person who said I don't have time or wouldn't listen".

Tommy John has advice for parents and kids who pitch

Tommy John  played for 6 major league teams and won 288 games  He won more than half of his games after having his ligament replaced with a tendon from his right forearm.  The procedure is now known as Tommy John Surgery.     You know it's almost like, now people know that you can get Tommy John surgery and people don't care, parents don't care.  I'll put my son out there for 30 games in the summer and i'ts a lot of stress on a young arm."

 There are a number of ways to get on base in baseball.  Hit, Walk, get hit, Fielders Choice, error, dropped 3rd strike, catcher's interference, even fielder's obstruction.  To get there every game is almost impossible.  South Bend's Andrew Velasquez now has a streak of reaching base in 56 straight games.  It's the longest streak of any professional player in affiliated baseball this season.

  Skylar Diggins has been on fire so far this season in the WNBA.  She followed a career high 33 at New York Sunday with a 32 point performance last night.  She only averaged 8 points a game last season.  So far this year she is scoring 20 a game and shooting 46%.

Big night of sprint car racing on the dirt at Plymouth Speedway

  It was a big night of racing at Plymouth.  In the 2nd year of going dirt,  they had 85 sprint cars for the Wednesday night show.   The mini sprints ran inside the bull ring and then the big boys like Bryan Clauson came out.  He ran the Indy 500 in 2013 and said he races about 100 races a year.  He was enjoying the new clay at Plymouth as were the fans.  Lots of fun sliding around the track.

Sharkey invited to world water ski event

Take a look at Jared Sharkey from the area.  He won the Men Trick event at the USA Water Ski Nationals in West Palm Beach last August.  Last month he graduated from IUSB.  He was just invited to the Dutch Masters pro water ski trick tournament in the Netherlands.   The tourney is for the top 15 skiers from around the world.  There are only 3 or 4 going from the US and Jared is one of them. The event will be held July 12th.

Mike Brey spoke to a crowd of about 200 at the Elkhart Rotary Club Monday at the Matterhorn Conference Center.  He told FOX 28 about the return of Jerian Grant,   I was very worried about this one because of all of the things that Jerian did on both ends of the floor and we never could replace him.  And the combination of going into a new league was probably a perfect storm".

The Chicago Blackhawks are returning to Notre Dame

 The Chicago Blackhawks are returning for training camp at Notre Dame.  The 2013 Stanley Cup Champs will have camp under the Golden Dome from September 19-21.  Then they'll go back home for their annual training camp festival the next day.  Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said ND has a "World Class facility" and they had an overwhelming positive response from their players and staff about being at ND.

Steve Anson remembered as great man, great coach

1972 Penn graduate Steve Anson died Sunday in a tree trimming accident.  The 60 year old was a very successful baseball coach for 35 years at Washburn University.  He was named to Kansas State University's "All Century Team".   His brother Dave Anson is the athletic director at Warsaw high school.  And his father Ted, who passed away in 2010, was a very popular math teacher and coach at Grissom Middle School until 1992.

  Making good out of a horrible situation.  That's what one high school mom is doing.   Jake West died on the LaPorte football practice Field September 25th, 2013.     Julie Schroeder said, "It was called ARVD.  Arithmo Genetic Ventricular Displasia.  Yeah.  Never knew anything was wrong with Jake's Heart.    And then for something like this to happen.... Bremen 5K at Fireman's Festival

July 5th, Bremen is hosting a 5K run.  It's an event to add to the excitement of the Fireman's Festival.  Runners will take off from Jane's Park and end at the pool.  They can take a quick shower and then go down and ride the rides, play some fair games and eat an elephant ear.  They want people to register before June 20th.  The first year event is all geared toward helping a great cause.

 September 25 2013 is a day the city of LaPorte will never forget.  It's the day that Slicer football player Jake West died of heart complications on the football field.  Tomorrow night I'll have a special story on a new foundation started by his family.  www.playforjake.org will ensure that #26's legacy will live on for others.

FOX 28 Sports Director Dean Huppert was inducted into the Michiana Racing Hall of Fame Friday night.  To commemorate the accomplishment on behalf of his station, he put together some of the highlights from the past 25 years in Michiana Racing.   From NASCAR stars to Plymouth, M-40, South Bend, Mottville and New Paris.  From boating to Redbud to go cart racing.  FOX 28 has been there to cover it all.

Michiana Hall of Famers appreciate honor

Jim Brown, Farmer Joe Smith, Carl Smith, Bob Senekker and Dean Huppert and FOX 28 were inducted into the Michiana Racing Hall of Fame Friday night.  The event was at South Bend Motor Speedway with over 50 "oldtimers" coming back for the event.  The Hall of Fame has been in existence since 2002 and now has over 90 members.

Lakeshore softball moves on to state

Lakeshore beat Croswell-Lexington 7-4 Thursday night to advance to the MHSAA State Softball Championship Saturday.  The Lancers got a 3-4 performance with 2 triples and 2 RBI from Sophomore Rachel Riedel.  Haley Thibeault went the distance on the mound with 4 strikeouts.  The Lancers now play Livonia Ladypark at 12:30 Saturday in East Lansing.

Glenn's Prentkowski Wins Regional

John Glenn's Tyler Prentkowski got medalist honors at the Warsaw Golf Regional at Stonehenge by shooting a 71.  Marian's Michael Makris shot a 73 to finish 3rd and will also advance to state.  NorthWood was the team champion with a 308 followed by Dwenger, Homestead, Northridge and Leo.

The Silver Hawks beat Lake County 5-3 Wednesday.  The victory put them one game closer to the postseason.  Dayton's elimination number is now 1 with 4 games left in the season.  The Hawks will play the Captains Thursday night and then close the first half with a 3 game series against West Michigan which will determine who gets first in the Midwest League's East Division.

The Michiana Racing Hall of Fame has announced it's class of 2014.  FOX 28 Sports is honored to be inducted Friday night at South Bend Motor Speedway while Bob Senneker, Carl Smith, Jim Brown, Sparky the Clown Barry Naragon and Farmer Joe Smith.  The induction will take place before the racing schedule gets going at 8:00.

The Silver Hawks had 6 games left in the season when they beat Lake County last night.  With Dayton getting rained out, the elimination # for the Dragons fell to 2 games with 5 to go.  West Michigan won 3-1 so they remained a half game ahead of the Hawks for first place in the East.

Silver Hawks fall to 2nd, playoff hopes still alive

The Silver Hawks lost at West Michigan 6-2 Monday night.  The White Caps now lead the East Division over SB by 1/2 game with 6 left to play in the first half.  The Hawks start a 3 game series with Lake County and then end the first half with 3 against West Michigan.  The top 2 teams advance to the postseason, so a combination of wins and Dayton losses will move both South Bend and West Michigan into the tourney at the end of the year.

The DC Outlaws men's fastpitch team went 5-0 to win the Petoskey tournament.  FOX 28 Sports Director Dean Huppert is the 3rd baseman for the Outlaws who beat Tiffany's 1-0 in the championship.  DC had 3 pitchers win games including Mike Huppert who had a 1-hitter, Lane Bender and the Tourney Pitching MVP Josh Gray.  Local players include Zach Weldy, Joe Czarnecki, Curtis Gunter, Tim Lawmaster, and Brent Miller.  Miller hit a walk off grand slam in game 4.

Bears sign former ND QB Jimmy Clausen

Former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen signed a contract with the Chicago Bears Thursday.  He'll battle for the backup job behind Jay Cutler.  Clausen was drafted #48 in the 2010 NFL Draft.  He played in 13 games that year and had 3 TD's and 9 interceptions.
