LaPorte County Police looking for driver in fatal hit and run

Posted:

LaPorte County Police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck that hit and killed a pedestrian early Saturday morning near Michigan City.

The pickup was actually the second vehicle to hit 25 year-old Christopher Chiles, of Chicago, in a short period of time on U.S. highway 20 just east of Woodland Avenue.

Police say it was the second blow to Chiles that likely killed him.

Chiles was allegedly hit by an SUV driven by Daniele Walters of Michigan City at about 3:04 a.m. Saturday. Police say she fled the scene. Police later aressted her and charged her with failing to stop at a serious bodily injury crash, a felony, and other charges.

A passerby saw Chiles lying in the westbound lanes. The passerby reportedly pulled his pickup truck up and parked it across both westbound lanes to block traffic and protect Chiles. The passerby reported that Chiles was was blinking, breathing and bleeding.

A pickup, believed to be a Chevy Silverado 4 x 4, drove around the passerby's truck and hit Chiles a second time.

Police say there's several eyewitness descriptions of the Silverado. It could be white, silver, light blue or possibly 'dark' in color.
