They share a unique and very difficult experience, having a parent serving in the military.
But this week, they're enjoying a camp complete with horseback riding, water skiing, canoeing and swimming, as part of "Operation Purple" camp at Camp Eberhart.
It's a camp free to children who's parents are serving in all branches of the military.
While the activities are similar to traditional camps, this camp's goal is to introduce the kids to others going through the same thing
Brice Emanuel, Executive Director YMCA Camp Eberhart says, "We're just trying to do some things to help the kids learn about one another and make some friendships that hopefully, they'll take with them when they leave here, somebody they can communicate with." Madison Watkins, a ten year old camper says, "I don't want to leave. It's so much fun. I made a lot of friends on the first day."It's the first time Michiana's YMCA Camp Eberhart has hosted one of these camps.
The weeklong camp is sponsored by the National Military Family Association and is held at 62 camps in 36 different states.
It doesn't cost the campers or their families anything.
It's funded by the Sierra Club.
