Federal marshals search woods for escaped inmate

Associated Press - July 15, 2009 4:34 PM ET

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) - Authorities are searching a wooded area east of Michigan City for an inmate who escaped Sunday from the Indiana State Prison along with two other inmates.

Federal marshal Shannon Robinson says state police, prison guards and others are using helicopters and police dogs to search a three-square-mile area between Michigan City and Long Beach for an inmate believed to be 46-year-old Mark Booher.

Robinson says a woman at a convenience store spotted someone matching the description of Booher going into the woods Wednesday.

Investigators say Booher and fellow inmates 45-year-old Lance Battreal and 49-year-old Charles Smith used utility tunnels to escape Sunday from the prison.

Smith, a convicted murderer, was caught Monday in Grand Beach, Mich. The two others remain at large.
