Here's your chance to help preserve a piece of American history right here in Michiana.
The Underground Railroad Society of Cass County, Inc. has entered an agreement to buy the historic James E. Bonine house in Vandalia, Mich.
The Bonines and their house were part of the Underground Railroad movement that helped move fugitive slaves from the south to free northern states and Canada before the Civil War.
The Society has 30 days to come up with the down payment.
Society officials say the house is historic for a couple of reasons.
"Not only is it important for the Underground Railroad aspect, but it is one of the very best examples of Victoria domestic architecture probably in southwestern Michigan or Northern Indiana," said Dave Bainbridge, Society President, and curator at the Center for History.
The Society also needs to pay to have one side of the house stabilized. If you'd like to help out, call Dave Bainbridge at 574-235-9664.
