Michiana hospitals not allowing minors to visit

Posted:

The spread of H1N1 is forcing more Michiana hospitals to change their policy on visitors.

Starting Friday, Elkhart General Hospital will not allow any visitors under the age of 18.

Hospital officials say signs will be posted at all doors. The new policy will be in effect until the end of the flu season.

Lakeland HeathCare is enacting the same policy for all of its locations in southwest Michigan.

All facilities are still open to minors for treatment.

Loren Hamel, MD, President and CEO of Lakeland HealthCare told FOX 28 that "dependent minors aged 18 and younger will not be allowed to visit our facilities until such time as the occurrence of H1N1 subsides.  We ask for our community's understanding at this time as we work to protect our patients."

Lakeland facilities include Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph;  Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles;  Lakeland Specialty Hospital, Berrien Center; the Center for Outpatient Services, Lakeland Health Park, St. Joseph;  and Lakeland Continuing Care Center, St. Joseph; and 17 other locations in southwest Michigan.

A statement will be released when visitation returns to normal.  Visit www.lakelandhealth.org for a complete list of locations.
