Associated Press - November 2, 2009 4:04 AM ET

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Northeastern Indiana now has a new medical school.

The Indiana University School of Medicine's new Medical Education Center was formally dedicated Friday on the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne campus.

IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell says northeastern Indiana needed a state-of-the-art medical education center and a complete medical school, and now it has one.

The new medical center contains about 42,000 square feet and features lecture halls and laboratories for first through fourth year medical school students, allied health students and faculty research.

The State Budget Committee approved $12 million for project in 2005. Construction began in 2007 and was completed earlier this year.
