Despite a slumping economy, one industry is alive and kicking in Michiana. The fitness industry has nearly tripled over the last few years.
The increase in fitness facilities moving into the area means an increase in competition. Gyms are lowering their prices and offering new deals to customers.
"You can shop around and find exactly what it is you are looking for," says Lori Mazik, General Manager at Pinnacle Athletics. Mazik says it's time to be a wise consumer and shop around. She also says it's important to know what you are looking for out of a membership. While some gyms may be cheaper, they may not offer the services you want.
"I am surrounded by other gyms in the area and I did it on purpose, to give people choices," says Lori Harris, owner of Punch gym in Mishawaka. Harris opened up her gym one year ago. She offers an intense workout using unconventional training tools. She says it's an escape from your typical box gym setting.
Cross-Fit moved into the Mishawaka area just six months ago. It's a unique workout experience as well. It combines olympic style weightlifting, gymnastics, and cardio. The owners say membership grows every week.
The cheapest monthly membership we found was $10 a month at USA Fitness.
Several gyms in the area offer free trials, money back guarantees, and special deals if you sign up with family members.
Here's a list of some of the gyms we spoke with:
