St. Joseph and Porter counties voters defeat RTD referendum

Posted:

Voters in St. Joseph and Porter Counties headed to the polls Tuesday, to decide whether to create a Regional Transportation District.

In St. Joseph County the measure failed in spectacular fashion with 19,640 "no" votes and 1,053 "yes" votes.

It also failed in Porter County by a large margin.  Just over 12,000 voted "no" with 3,122 voted in favor.

The measure would have created a new transportation authority for Lake, Porter, LaPorte and St. Joseph Counties.  The governoring body would have the power to raise the income tax by .25%.  The authority would use the money to make improvements to the South Shore Line and other regional transportation needs.

It had to pass two out of the four counties. However, Lake and LaPorte counties did not open the polls Tuesday.  Since it was the only issue on the ballot, election officials said they could justify the costs of holding an election.
