MADISON, Ind. (AP) - Some female juvenile inmates have been transferred from a detention center in Indianapolis to one in Madison as part of a move that state officials say will make better use of prison space.
The Indiana Department of Correction says the 91 girls were moved Tuesday from the former Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility into the new Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility in southeastern Indiana.
They will be housed in existing buildings on the Madison State Hospital campus, where the Madison Correctional Facility for women is also located.
Inmates from the Indiana Women's Prison near downtown Indianapolis are expected to begin moving this month into the former juvenile facility on the city's west side.
Prison officials say the moves will help create bed space while saving the state money.
