Eight student from La Porte High School will receive the President's Volunteer Service Award on Thursday.
Ben Barber, Rachel Cable, Julia Garay, Victor Vargas, Martin Garcia, Vanessa Martinez, Brandi Morrow and Alan Sprad will receive the awards because of hours they spent volunteering. Each of them has given over 175 hours of their time in service, and many of them have gone over the 250 hour mark.
According to a press release, the students offered their time in many different ways and helped the community through activities such as helping the La Porte Parks Department clean area parks. The students also painted park benches and cleaned the lakes of debris. These teens also helped organized three blood drives; collected over 400 pairs of sandals/flip flops for children in the Middle East; and during the Holidays raised funds to adopt under-privileged families. Those funds enabled them to purchase gifts and food. Those are just a few of the volunteer efforts these amazing students undertook this past year.
The President's Volunteer Service Awards is signed by President Barack Obama, and are issued through The LEAGUE and presented by Vicki Perkins, Indiana State Director of The LEAGUE. The LEAGUE is a school and web-based system for service learning that builds character and empowers young people to "do good" in their community, the nation and the world.
