Sled hockey coming to South Bend

If you've never seen a game of sled hockey, you're about to get your chance.

The St. Joseph's High School hockey team will play an exhibition sled hockey game against a team from Fort Wayne on November 22 at the Ice Box in South Bend.

If you've never heard of sled hockey, it's exactly what it sounds like -- hockey played on sleds instead of skates. The game was invented to allow people with disabilities to play.

The Fort Wayne team is made up of players with disabilities, and they're good. The St. Joe players have never played sled hockey, so it should be quite a show.

"I think it's going to be a riot," said St. Joe hockey coach Chris Kleva. "I've seen it on tape. I've never seen it live and I certainly hope the players at St. Joe will really have a good time at this. I'm really looking forward to it."

They'll face off at 4 pm on November 22. At 5 pm, the Fort Wayne team will take on a sled hockey team from Grand Rapids.

Admission is free, but they will be accepting donations in honor of Adam Milani, a former St. Joe hockey player who was paralyzed in game in 1984 and passed away in 2005.
