Trial in chained-teen's death moved to Kalamazoo

Associated Press - November 13, 2009 5:34 PM ET

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (AP) - The murder trial for a southwestern Michigan couple whose teenage daughter died in a house fire while chained to her bed has been moved from Centreville to Kalamazoo, and will begin Jan. 26.

St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman held a hearing Friday to determine the new venue and date for the trial of Anthony and Marsha Springer.

Stutesman will preside over the trial in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court. He decided last month to change the venue.

The Springers are charged with felony murder, torture and first-degree child abuse in the February 2008 death of 16-year-old Calista Springer.

Her father has said she had special needs and the tethering was necessary to keep her from leaving her bedroom and their Centreville home at night.
