LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Three red-tailed hawk chicks that were removed from a tree on Purdue's campus this past spring and put in captivity are now on their own.
A professional wildlife rehabilitation released the last of the hawks above a field in Lafayette last Thursday.
The others were released earlier last week, one in Clinton County and the other in western Tippecanoe County.
A team of wildlife experts removed the three hawk chicks from a nest in a tree at Purdue Village in May after a student was struck by 1 of its parents that had become aggressive protecting them. They were placed in a wildlife center, where a surrogate hawk was used to teach them how to hunt. They also learned how to fly inside a pen.
