The movie "It's a Wonderful Life" teaches us every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.
But there's another thing that happens when a bell rings -- everyday angels help needy families enjoy the holidays.
The Elkhart Salvation Army kicked off its annual Christmas kettle campaign on Tuesday. You'll see volunteers ringing bells next to donation kettles all over town throughout the holiday season.
Due to the increased demand caused by the struggling economy, Salvation Army officials say they've raised their kettle campaign goal this year to $400,000.
"All that goes to, once again, to help programs throughout Thanksgiving and Christmas, but actually throughout the whole year for utilities through food assistance," said Maj. Steven Woodard.
Some of the money will go towards the Salvation Army's Thanksgiving dinner, during which they hope to serve a thousand meals.
