People all over the country and here in Michiana put down their cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco today for the Great American Smokeout.
The event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society, who does this the third Thursday of November every year in hopes of persuading people to quit the habit.
The A.C.S. says more people try to quit smoking on this day than any other day of the year, including New Year's Eve. And both smokers and former smokers we spoke with say the Smokeout is a good idea.
Eric Frankenberger, a smoker says, "I can set one day aside. I can give it that. "
Charity Knox, another smoker says, "Yeah, I would. I would really do it. Because there's a lot of bad things in cigarettes."
Dan Metzger, a former smoker says, "My daughter had to quit smoking. I quit smoking. My wife had cancer. I just had a lung cancer operation in January."
Your local health department has a variety of cessation resources available for you or someone you love to start living tobacco free.
