BROWNSTOWN, Ind. (AP) - The FBI and Indiana State Police are reviewing Brownstown's financial records after a routine audit found the clerk-treasurer has been paid more than $60,000 above her annual salary.
Town records show clerk-treasurer Rebeckah "Becky" Fee received nearly $103,000 through Oct. 8 even though a town ordinance calls for the clerk-treasurer to be paid just under $41,000 a year.
The Tribune of Seymour says Brownstown Town Council President Leroy Warren confirmed that state police and the FBI are investigating.
Fee did not return messages seeking comment and has not been at work since mid-October. The town has appointed an interim clerk-treasurer.
The investigation began after the Indiana Board of Accounts started a routine audit of town records in October.
