Ind. county seeks tenders for pioneer cemeteries

Associated Press - December 1, 2009 6:54 AM ET

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. (AP) - Officials in a western Indiana county are looking for volunteers who want to adopt pioneer cemeteries.

The Fountain County cemetery board hopes to adopt out about 50 small cemeteries, each with about 20 headstones.

Volunteers would have to commit to mowing the sites several times each year and checking periodically for vandalism.

Board member Jasper Fogleman says most cemeteries could easily be adopted by a family, a class or a business. He estimates volunteers might work 10-12 hours a year.

The county has 117 known cemeteries, but Fogleman says new ones are continually being found. The pioneer cemeteries generally date from the late 1800s and are often on private property.
