Elkhart radio legends are honored

Posted:

A pair of Michiana radio legends with a combined 85 years on the airwaves were honored Wednesday.

Most of us know the names Bill Darwin and Allan Strike.

Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore renamed the corner outside Froggy 102.7,  the Darwin Stryke Corner.

The two broadcasters have retired after long and very successful careers informing and entertaining Michiana.

Darwin was actually here long before Ed and I were on WSJV-TV.  He hosted Good Morning Michiana.

He also worked for WTRC for decades and was well known as the host of the MDA telethon.

Allan Stryke also broadcast on WTRC hosting "Sound off," "Swap Shop" and the news.

Both said the renaming was an unexpected honor and that they loved helping serve in the community.

Bill Darwin, longtime broadcaster who had an intersection named after him, said, "When I came here 43 years ago, I didn't expect to stay this long. But I got involved with the community, made some investments, my kids liked the schools and I liked the community, the people. I was here two days and felt at home, so that's the kind of community it is and that's why I stayed."

Allan Stryke, another longtime broadcaster celebrating the honor said, "Over the years I worked at the radio station, those of us who were on the air, those of us who were in management, those of us who programmed the station, all lived in the city and people in the city knew us."

Stryke says he believes that helped the two men and the station remain successful.

In their retirement, these two haven't slowed down.

Both are volunteering for non-profits like Ryan's Place and in the schools.
