Press Release from Goshen Police on Mariah Gibson's death

On May 05/16/2011 at approximately 9:34 P.M. officers were dispatched to 413 N. 8th street, Goshen in reference to a child who was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Bridge Street and 8th Street. The child later found to be Mariah Gibson, 18 months old, was transported to Indiana University Health at Goshen Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Mande Leeann Turner-Berger reported that her daughter Mariah broke free from her and wandered into the intersection where she was struck by an an older rusty red four door passenger car. Ms. Turner-Berger told police that the vehicle left the scene northbound on 8th Street.

A thorough investigation of the reported incident from Ms. Turner-Berger was conducted by the Goshen Police Department. Detectives investigating the incident were unable to corroborate certain events which had been described by Ms. Turner-Berger. Additional interviews were conducted which led detectives to the conclusion that the incident had not occurred as was previously reported by Ms. Turner-Berger.

Mande Leeann Turner-Berger, 22 years of age, Goshen, was arrested for Obstruction of Justice, class D Felony in reference to this incident. A second individual, Daniel W. Penington, 30 years of age, Goshen was also arrested for Obstruction of Justice; class D Felony in reference to this incident. Ms. Turner-Berger was also being held at the Elkhart County Corrections Complex on a Goshen City Warrant and a no bond Marshall County Warrant. The investigation will be turned over to the Elkhart County Prosecutors Office for review of charges and any other additional charges if appropriate. All further inquiries in reference to this incident should be forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutors Office.
