LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Legislation that would expand a state reform school district to failing schools beyond Detroit and ease the potential discontinuation of traditional land line service is among a flurry of bills expected to be passed on the last day of voting in 2013. State lawmakers also plan to update campaign laws heading into an election year by doubling donation limits and keeping intact rules for political ads over objections from the secretary of state.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The word "selfie" is now part of the official Michigan Supreme Court record. The word referring to someone who takes their own picture, usually with a smartphone, was used yesterday by Chief Justice Robert Young Jr. as he talked about a Detroit-area judge who took a picture of his fit, shirtless frame and sent it to a female sheriff's deputy. Young - a conservative, bow-tied justice - responded to a colleague who noted he used the word by saying it shows that he's in tune with today's culture.
DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Mayor-elect Mike Duggan passed an audition held by Detroiters last month, and he'll face the music before he even takes office. Duggan serves as the keynote speaker tomorrow at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's annual meeting at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. The man who was elected in November and becomes mayor next month plans to talk about the ensemble's role in revitalizing Detroit, which is undergoing the largest public bankruptcy reorganization in U.S. history.
DETROIT (AP) - The Michigan Film Office says the pilot for a TV adaptation of the movie "12 Monkeys" is being shot in the Detroit area and has been approved for a film incentive from the state. The pilot for a Syfy Television Network series was approved for an incentive of $1.5 million on $5.3 million of projected in-state expenditures. It focuses on a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day to find and destroy the source of a deadly plague.
