NEW YORK (AP) - The first-place Detroit Tigers have reinforced the back end of their shaky bullpen by acquiring closer Joakim Soria from the Texas Rangers for minor league pitchers Jake Thompson and Corey Knebel. Soria is 1-3 with a 2.70 ERA and 17 saves in 19 chances. Detroit has been looking to upgrade a relief corps that ranked 12th out of 15 American League teams with a 4.37 ERA.

DETROIT (AP) - Defending champion Bowling Green is the favorite to win this season's Mid-American Conference title. A poll of media members who cover the conference picked the Falcons to finish ahead of Akron in the East Division. The Falcons will seek to defend their title with new coach Dino Babers.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - A prosecutor says Eastern Michigan University wide receiver Demarius Reed was killed "for an iPhone and a wallet that were never even used." Testimony began Wednesday in the trial of Ed Thomas on open murder and robbery charges in the shooting of the football player from Chicago's South Side. Alleged accomplice Kristopher Pratt admits he shot Reed and has agreed to testify against Thomas.
