PHOENIX (AP) - Torii Hunter and Austin Jackson homered as the Detroit Tigers opened their interleague series in Arizona by beating the Diamondbacks 4-3 last night. Justin Verlander allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings to win for the third time in his last four starts. He struck out five to pass Hal Newhouser on the Tigers' all-time strikeout list.

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers have gotten a good return on their short-term investment in right-hander Joba Chamberlain. Chamberlain pitched the eighth inning in Sunday's sweep-avoiding win against Cleveland and did not allow a run for the 13th time in 14 games. The Tigers signed the former New York Yankees player to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Lions have claimed wide receiver Reese Wiggins off waivers. Wiggins was released by the New England Patriots last week. He had 26 receptions for 372 yards and four touchdowns last year at East Carolina and caught 80 passes for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns over three seasons.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Jury selection has started in the trial of a man in the fatal shooting of Chicago's Demarius Reed. Judge Donald Shelton says Ed Thomas rejected an offer of a plea deal. Kristopher Pratt pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Friday.
