TIGERS-RANGERS

Rangers beat Tigers 11-8 despite 3 HRs for Cabrera

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - David Murphy put Texas ahead with a three-run home run, and the Rangers spoiled a three-homer game from Miguel Cabrera with an 11-8 victory against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday night.

Murphy's shot just over the fence in right field gave Texas an 8-7 lead and answered a bases-loaded double from Prince Fielder that put Detroit up by two in the sixth inning after the Rangers had walked Cabrera intentionally even though first base wasn't open.

Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the fifth off Derek Holland, then went deep again in the eighth against Tanner Scheppers.

Cabrera, the 2012 AL Triple Crown winner and this year's leader in average and RBIs, went 4 for 4 with 5 RBIs and has 11 homers, one off the AL lead.

BLACKHAWKS-RED WINGS

Young Red Wings have evened series with Blackhawks

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings have gotten much younger than they used to be.

And now, as the Chicago Blackhawks are finding out, Detroit is a much better team than it was during the lockout-delayed regular season thanks to its improved cast of inexperienced players.

Red Wings rookie Brendan Smith netted game-winning goal in Saturday's series-evening, 4-1 win at Chicago.

First-year player Damien Brunner and rookie Gustav Nyquist have also scored game-winning goals this postseason and teammate Joakim Andersson ranks among rookie scoring leaders.

Chicago is counting on a young, but experienced, player as the second-round series shifts to Detroit for Game 3 on Monday night.

Captain Jonathan Toews, a 25-year-old center, is in an 8-game postseason scoring slump that dates to last year.

WHITE SOX-ANGELS

Angels' Vargas goes 7 scoreless against Chisox

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jason Vargas scattered four hits through seven scoreless innings, Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick each hit two-run doubles, and the Los Angeles Angels coaxed a pair of bases-loaded walks out of Jake Peavy in the fourth inning of a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Vargas (3-3) struck out six and walked three while helping the Angels gain a split of the 4-game series. The middle of the Chicago lineup - Alex Rios, Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko - were a combined 0 for 8 with a walk against the left-hander, who posted his first victory in six career starts against the White Sox.

Peavy (5-2) gave up four runs, four hits and five walks over six innings after going 4-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his previous five starts.

MARINERS-INDIANS

Indians blank Mariners 6-0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Justin Masterson struck out a season-high 11 in seven shutout innings and Michael Brantley homered and drove in four runs off Felix Hernandez as the Cleveland Indians toppled yet another former Cy Young Award winner on Sunday with a 6-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Brantley hit a three-run homer in the second inning off Hernandez (5-3), who failed to go at least six innings for the first time this season.

Staked to an early lead, Masterson (7-2) was dominant for the second straight start. He allowed three singles, easily outdueled Hernandez and ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 19. He shut out the New York Yankees 1-0 on four hits in his previous outing.

The Indians improved to 7-1 against Cy Young recipients, knocking off Hernandez, R.A. Dickey, David Price, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Bartolo Colon and Justin Verlander.
