MIAMI (AP) - LeBron James made a layup as time expired in overtime last night to give the Miami Heat a 103-102 win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. James finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Heat. Paul George hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime, and made three free throws with 2.2 seconds left in overtime to give the Pacers a 1-point lead.

DETROIT (AP) - IndyCar says qualifying for the second race of series doubleheaders at Belle Isle, Toronto and Houston will be split into two groups. All cars will be split into the groups for 12 minutes each, with five minutes of guaranteed green-flag time. Series race director Beaux Barfield says the move will "give a premium to the amount of track time available to each competitor."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Panthers have signed second round draft pick Kawann Short. The defensive tackle from Purdue was selected No. 44 overall in last month's NFL draft. Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman says Short "was the best pass-rushing defensive tackle in the draft."

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A woman who was struck in the eye with a sword while watching a fencing match at Notre Dame will get a second chance in court. The Indiana Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that a lower court judge should have given Lydia Lanni more time to gather evidence. Lanni sued the NCAA after her eye was seriously injured at a 2010 match.
