A man wanted in South Bend has been taken into custody in Rockford, Illinois.  He was arrested without incident in the basement of a home near the corner of Court and Palm Streets in Rockford. We're told police used a flash bang, which makes a loud noise designed to disorient the suspect, before arresting him.

The sheriff in Rockford, Illinois, says U.S. Marshals were in a stand-off situation with a suspect who is wanted on murder charges in South Bend. Police confirmed with our sister station, WREX in Rockford, that man was Anthony "Bones" Jefferson.

The reporter has also told us that the SWAT team has arrived on scene, along with hostage negotiators.  U.S. Marshals came to the scene first, Rockford Police met them there. The stand-off had been going on since early afternoon.

"Once Marshal service personnel on the scene realized they were in a barricaded situation, they immediately requested assistance from both the city and the county," U.S. Marshal Debra LoMonaco told WREX.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Dominic LaSparro told WREX he's glad the arrest went smoothly.

"Anytime there's no injury to the public,  to the officers and to the suspect, you couldn't ask for anything more than that," he said. "We believe there was a dangerous criminal taken off the streets."

Jefferson's step-mother, Alice Jefferson, told WREX reporters at the scene that the suspect had come to Rockford Wednesday for a visit.

"He told me he had gotten his life together and that he was doing very well," she said, "And I was pleased with that."

We've been reporting on Jefferson since Monday. He is wanted for on charges of murder and attempted murder after police say he shot and killed Jason Reid on South Bend's northwest side on Monday morning. A second victim, Tyreece Walker, was also hurt but is expected to recover

Jefferson was last seen driving a white 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse with Illinois license plate number L228494.

On Wednesday, Jefferson was hit with two additional charges, each of Robbery and Confinement.

Police say he forced a woman to withdraw money from an ATM on Sunday and stole her cell phone. They also say that Jefferson robbed a South Bend 7-11 store at the corner of Logan and Jefferson on Monday.
