Not since Anthony Johnson has Notre Dame recruited and got a kid from the South Bend School Corporation. South Bend Clay Junior Daniel Smith was offered a scholarship over the weekend by Charlie Weis, and it didn't take him long to decide between IU, Purdue, Central Michigan and Notre Dame.
Last season he had 9 touchdowns and 1,065 yards. Retired Coach Mike Kuntz called him the greatest player he's ever had. He said he's broken every receiving record at Clay and he's had to accomplish that with 7 different quarterbacks.
Smith called it a "dream come true." Both of his sisters went to Notre Dame and his brother-in-law Gerome Sapp played for the Irish.
Daniel carries a 3.6 GPA and Coach Kuntz called him a great leader.
