Dance fever is sweeping across Michiana. Despite the tough economy, some area dance studios are packed with new clients. It's art in general. Shows like "So You Think You Can Dance" and "American Idol" showcase people's unique skills and talents. And history tells us that when times are tough and the economy is down, creativity takes center stage.
In it's fifth year, critics say "So You Think You Can Dance" is better than ever.
Chicago Latin Dance Instructor Mario Skonieczny travels to Michiana to teach dance to an increasing number of clients who watch the show.
"It just brings exposure to dancing. I think a lot of people don't know what they can do with dancing," said Latin Dance Instructor Mario Skonieczny.
Notre Dame American Studies Professor Erika Doss says it's really the economy that sparks creativity.
"Tight times loosen creativity," said Notre Dame American Studies Professor Erika Doss.
Doss says it goes back to the Great Depression and government programs.
"Included in these programs were art programs or various work programs for artists, said Doss.
And Doss says you can see that same inspiration today.
"When pushed up against a wall, we'll opt for being creative," said Doss.
Whether it's former R-V workers making handbags, new entrepreneurs, or people picking up the quick step...instead of being depressed creative juices are flowing.
"It's a great escape for what's gong on out there," said Michiana Dance Studio Owner Kathy Nate.
Michiana Dance Studio Owner Kathy Nate says business has tripled in the last three years so much so she's hired visiting instructors.
"I thought ok I'm going to be the first thing people eliminate. I was so surprised when my phone would continue to ring," said Nate.
Nate says when the economy's down people have more time to be creative. Her business card says it all: Dance, it's what you've always dreamed of doing.
"Now they have the time somehow, someway they're finding the money to do it," said Nate.
Nate says most group classes are only about 10 bucks a lesson. And "West Coast Swing" is the most popular dance in Michiana right now.
