GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) - Hard-hit Elkhart County could become home three electric vehicle manufacturers if a Norwegian company chooses northern Indiana as the site for a new factory.
The Elkhart County Council on Tuesday approved a 10-year property tax break as it tries to persuade Think North America to open its first U.S. plant near Middlebury. The company said it also is considering sites in Oregon and Michigan.
The company plans for the plant to at first produce 2,500 autos a year and have 415 workers by 2013.
Navistar International Corp. plans to build all-electric delivery trucks starting next year in Wakarusa, while startup Electric Motors Corp. plans to make electric-hybrid drive trains.
Elkhart County has seen thousands of layoffs from the recreational vehicle industry and had a 14.5 percent unemployment rate for November.
