1 package miniature marshmallow (16 oz)
2 - 3 pounds powdered sugar
2 Tbs. water
vegetable shortening
large microwave safe bowl
large spoon
food coloring (optional)
Coat the bowl with a thin layer of shortening. Pour the marshmallows and water into the bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minutes. Stir with a spoon that has been coated with shortening. Microwave at additional 15 second intervals, stirring after each, until marshmallows are smooth.
Begin adding powdered sugar, 1 cup and a time. Stir well after each addition. Continue to add powdered sugar until the fondant looks like dough. It will be sticky at this point. Turn out the fondant onto a work surface coated with powdered sugar. Apply a generous amount of shortening to clean hands (remove any jewelry!). Knead powdered sugar into the fondant until it is no longer sticky. Note: you will not use all of the powdered sugar.
Decide what colors you want, and divide the fondant into portions for each color. Be sure to wrap the fondant in plastic wrap when you are not working with it. It will dry out quickly. Put on rubber gloves and protect your work surface with a large piece of wax paper. Dip tooth picks into past food coloring and then pokes holes into the fondant. Knead until the color is uniform.
