Brian "Buck" Buckley, a 1983 graduate of Elkhart Central High School, is returning to his alma mater to direct the school's athletic department.

Most recently Buckley was president of Reach 360, an Elkhart company that outsources human resources, accounting, IT, payroll and benefits.  Prior to starting Reach 360, Buckley was vice president of human resources for the Banks Corp.

Buckley also has a background in coaching. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was the head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Hillsdale College.  He has a bachelor's degree in health and physical education and his education certification from Hillsdale.  Buckley recently returned to coaching and served as assistant baseball coach at Memorial High School this past year.

According to a news release, Buckley said he considers the Central AD position his dream job and that when it became available, he readily threw his hat in the ring. "I've always wanted to do this," he stated. "That what I went to college for, to be a teacher and coach and eventually an athletic director."

The doors that opened up to him, however, were in the business area and Buckley ended moving in another direction.

"Even when I moved back to Elkhart, which is where I wanted to raise my family, my dream was to be an AD," Buckley continued. "There simply were not a lot of jobs for ADs out there,"

"Still, my goal was to get back into the educational system by the time I was 45," he said.

The 44-year-old added his interest was relit when he got back on the baseball field this past spring with head coach Scott Rost. "The thing that most excites me is having the opportunity to work with both adult coaches and student athletes," said Buckley, who will begin his new duties Aug. 3.

"I've always loved athletics, ever since I was a player," he said. "I've worked with adults for 17 years, helping them reach their goals. Now I'm excited to have the opportunity to do the same thing with our student athletes."

Superintendent Mark Mow said Elkhart Community Schools is fortunate to have someone of Buckley's talent joining the ECS leadership team. "His leadership abilities, knowledge of the Elkhart community, and enthusiasm for Central athletics make him an excellent choice," Mow stated.  "He is the right person at the right time to lead the Central athletic program."

In addition to being familiar to the local business community, Buckley is well-known among Elkhart's community service organizations. He is president of CARES, the volunteer arm of Elkhart Schools, and has served as chairman of the March of Dimes. He is also president of the Eastwood Elementary School Parent/Teacher Organization, a board member of the Elkhart Leadership Council,   a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church Advisory Council, and a past board member of the United Way.

Buckley and his wife Kelly, a language arts teacher at Memorial, reside in Elkhart with their two daughters, who attend Eastwood Elementary School.
