Where there's ice, you need salt. Last year, many Michiana street departments struggled with their salt stock because of rising salt costs. But this year, most of the street departments we talked to, including Elkhart's say they're in good shape.
"We have plenty of salt. We bid with the state and the price is a lot lower than it was a year ago. The price is about $35 less a ton than it was last year," said Elkhart Street Commissioner Marty Morgan.
Morgan says crews will focus on the main roads and major intersections before salting or plowing side streets or neighborhoods.
