Mexican Hot Chocolate (Champurrado)



  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup masa flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, grated or finely chopped
  • 1 cinnamon stick



Heat milk and chocolate in saucepan, stirring to dissolve the chocolate.  When chocolate is dissolved, remove from heat.  Mix masa with water in another saucepan and place over low heat.  Add cinnamon stick and cook until mixture has thickened and masa is translucent.  Add the chocolate milk and sugar, and stir until sugar dissolves.  Simmer a few minutes and remove cinnamon stick.  Serve in mugs.
