With the freezing temperatures we all want to warm our cars up before we get in, but local police say that makes you a target.
Police say as the weather gets colder, they see a drastic increase in car thefts because people leave their cars running to heat them up.
Captain Phil Trent with the South Bend Police department says even locking your keys in your car still makes you a target.
Trent says, "The colder it gets, the more people start their cars and let it idle, the more auto thefts we have. The more pedestrians we have who are walking around not interested in being cold themselves, the temptation is even grate because the temperature is cold."
Trent says your best option to protect yourself and stay warm is to buy a remote starter.
