With the mercury set to dip into the single digits in Michiana, space heaters are flying off hardware store shelves. Elkhart's Palmer Ace Hardware is almost out of space heaters, but they will get another shipment in Friday.
They say if you're in the market for a space heater, you might want to go with a ceramic disc model.
"They're more energy efficient and they don't take as much electricity to run," said store president Brad Jones.
If you have space heaters at home, here are some safety tips to remember:
- Don't place your heater within three feet of anything flammable, like curtains or furniture
- Make sure they're not in high traffic areas where children or pets will come into contact with them
- Always unplug space heaters when you're not using them
- When buying a space heater, look for the 'UL' symbol, which means the heater has been safety tested and will turn off when it tips over
