UPDATE: Massive fire burns at Century Foam in Elkhart

The Century Foam facility in Elkhart erupted into flames shortly before noon Thursday.

A Fox28 journalist at the scene said the fire, near Nappanee Street and Hively, could be seen from a half-mile away.

The fire is currently under control, though Nappanee Street from Lusher Avenue to County Road 20 is completely closed in both directions.  Hively Avenue from Nappanee Street to 17th Street also is closed to through traffic. 

The company, at 2600 S. Nappanee St., makes foam products for the RV and van conversion industries, according to the website. Century Foam also makes medical and office foam items.

Authorities say an employee coming home from work saw wood pallets and cardboard caught fire in the facility, and no foam caught fire.  There is still no word on whether the building was damaged indoors.

Authorities say it is lucky that the foam at the facility, because they would not have had enough foam agent to put out that kind of fire.

Firefighters arriving to battle the blaze were confronted by a large fire with heavy smoke pouring from the building.

There are no immediate reports of any injuries.
