St. Joseph County Metro Homicide confirmed Monday afternoon that two-year-old Isaac Dunner and four-year-old Dominick Wilk, both of New Carlisle, died of hyperthermia. Forensic pathologist Dr. Joseph Prahlow says exposure to excessive heat while trapped in the trunk of a car caused the boys' organs to shut down, resulting in their deaths.
St. Joseph County officials continue to investigate the boys' deaths. This week detectives will conduct more interviews including the mother of the boys.
Friday, police were called to a house in the 300 block of Ada Street. Police received a 911 call from the mother stating she found her two boys in the trunk of her car.
Two-year-old Isaac Dunner died at a local hospital on Friday. The four-year-old, Dominick Wilk, was listed in critical condition on Friday. Wilk died Saturday Morning, at the hospital.
The family released a statement through their church's pastor. "Our family is suffering greatly through this tragedy, and we are thankful for the support we have received from our family, friends, and community. We simply have no way to express our sorrow at the loss of Dominick and Isaac," read the statement. "We humbly ask for the prayers of our neighbors and community in the days ahead."
They want to let the public know how upset they are over the deaths. They also want to thank those emergency workers who came to help.
