Driving class makes teens more comfortable behind the wheel

Posted:

Handing your teen the car keys can be a pretty nerve-racking experience.  Drivers ed may help ease that anxious feeling in the pit of your stomach but what if you could do more to make sure your teen is safe behind the wheel?  The Mid-Ohio Driving school and Key Bank are trying to do just that.  They've come together to offer a class called 'Key to Safe Teen Driving.'  The 3 hour class takes kids out to the Joyce Center parking lot at Notre Dame and puts their driving skills to the test.  They go through classroom instruction, learn how to brake on wet pavement and how to handle an emergency lane change.  Then they hop in the Skid Car which is specially designed to mimic skidding on ice.

"Parents are very appreciative of the program," says Key Bank PR Manager Dan Davis.  "The parents who attend can see their kids develop confidence as they go through.  A lot of kids are very timid at first but they gain confidence in their abilities and what they can do behind the wheel."

Ben Ganger took the class Wednesday morning.  He says, "The lane change and the wet braking, those really prepared me for a dangerous situation like on the freeway or if someone darts out in front of you or something, I feel a lot better prepared to handle that now."

The 'Key to Safe Teen Driving' classes are offered in 7 other cities throughout the Midwest.  The classes kicked off a few years ago but this is the first year they've come to our area.  If you want to find out more about the class, there are still openings Thursday, July 14th.
