From the outside, it looks just like a standard Indiana Department of Transportation truck. Inside, you won't find an INDOT worker. Instead, you'll find a uniformed Indiana State Police Trooper on patrol.
ISP and INDOT unveiled the first truck Wednesday in Indianapolis. They say the $32,000 vehicles will be used for ISP work zone enforcement across the state.
INDOT says four out of every five people killed in highway work zones are motorists, not highway workers. The top causes of work zone crashes in 2010 were following too closely, improper lane change and failure to yield the right of way. ISP believes Troopers in the pickups will be better able to spot the violations.
ISP says use of the pickups is in addition to traditional marked and unmarked vehicles, including motorcycle patrols and unmarked Mustangs.
