Battered women, homeless people, and others in need got free dental care Friday. Dozens turned out for the third annual Pankey Dental Access Day at the Heraeus Dental building in South Bend.
They got free tooth extractions, fillings, and cleanings. The event is sponsored by the Pankey Institute and Heraeus Dental.
They say it is targeted toward those who haven't had a checkup in a long time.
Customers say they were happy with the service. Virginia Jacobs, who came for the free dental care, is unemployed and says she would not have been able to afford the service if there had been a charge.
The free clinic is providing dental care through several area organizations including Dismas House, St. Margaret's House, South Bend Center for the Homeless, YWCA Women's Shelter, Hope rescue, and other church organizations. The event continues Saturday from 8 AM to 3 PM.
