Sadly, beach season is coming to a close. And that means flu season is just around the corner. But with many places already offering the flu vaccine, can it be too early to get the shot?
Dr. Tom Sweeney sees patients every year coming into the emergency room at St. Joseph Regional Medical center, fighting off severe cases of the flu.
"The immunization is likely good for four to six months so if you get it a little early...it may be petering out before the end of the flu season," said Sweeney.
That season typically runs from October through May.
Pharmacist Marc Merrill starts offering the vaccine to his customers on September first, and says the length of protection the vaccine provides varies from person to person.
"It depends on your immune system, how old you are, how you react to the shot, those are all factors that have to be taken into consideration," said Merrill.
