Saint Mary's College students will be eating a lot healthier soon. The college has become the first in the country to endorse the "Real Food Commitment."
They'll "commit" to purchase at least 20 percent "real food" by 2020. It will also focus on helping students see their food as "food for thought."
Organizer Kimberly Roland says it will encourage them to ask a variety of questions, "How it was grown? How it's produced? Who grew it? Was it processed? How much were the people who grew it and producing it and making it getting paid? Are they getting paid a fair living wage?"
The program has shifted 35 million dollars in institutional food purchases to family farms and fair food businesses.
