Tom Powell - Fox 28: South Bend, Elkhart IN News, Weather, Sports

Prime Anchor

Tom Powell

I can still remember being in the stands at Notre Dame Stadium as they filmed scenes for "Rudy."  I spotted the camera pointing in my direction several times, so I was pretty sure I would wind up in the actual film.  My brother must have dragged me to the theater a dozen times to see the movie, but unless I missed something, I didn't make the cut.

My family's love for the Fighting Irish runs pretty deep.  My Grandpa Ryan graduated from Notre Dame in 1933.  One of the first things I did when I moved back to the Midwest in September of 2011, was to take my picture in front of Sorin Hall where my grandpa lived.

My favorite time of the year is football season because I seem to get a lot more house-guests than normal!  My brother graduated from ND, but I have to say the biggest Irish fan in the Powell Family is my mother.  She has very little sense of humor when it comes to Notre Dame losses.  Luckily I was here to witness the undefeated 2012 regular season.

Not only do family roots run deep with Notre Dame, the University of Illinois is also a big part of the family tree.  I graduated from Illinois where I earned a scholarship for excellence in news writing.  My Grandpa and Gradma Powell and my sister are also fellow alumni.  The experience I gained from my professors at UofI prepared me well for my broadcasting career.  I love to cheer on the Illinois basketball team, much to the dismay of the Hoosiers in the FOX28 Newsroom.

Speaking of the FOX28 Newsroom, it really is an incredible place full of very talented people.  I'm thrilled to share the anchor desk with Traci Capellman.  Her experience and knowledge of the area pay off for us everyday.  Dean Huppert's coverage of local sports is second to none, and John Fischer is clearly the guy I count on when I want to know what mother nature has in store.

A little advice to current broadcasting students... be prepared to travel.  My first job took me to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where I reported for KSFY-TV.  I then moved to Memphis, TN where I spend eight years as the lead reporter and primary fill-in anchor for the top rated newscast in the market.  In Memphis, I covered everything from a nasty wind storm dubbed "Hurricane Elvis" to the Prime Minister of Japan's visit to Graceland.  I also helped the station develop and expand its social media presence.

I'm thrilled to have been asked to participate in several community efforts in Michiana including a weekly program called "Reading with Rufus" where my dog Buddy and I help students sharpen their reading skills.  I'm happy to call the area home, and hope to continue to share the stories that make Michiana a great place to live!
