Tom brings extensive reporting experience and Michiana roots to the anchor desk at FOX 28. He joined WSJV in September 2011 and is excited to be back in the Midwest. Growing up in the Chicagoland area, he spent many Saturdays traveling to South Bend for Notre Dame football games. His greatest memory from Notre Dame Stadium was being there on the day they filmed the movie "Rudy."
But Tom's connection to Notre Dame goes much deeper. Tom's grandfather graduated from Notre Dame in 1933. His brother is also a Notre Dame Alum. When Notre Dame loses, don't mess with Tom's mom! The Irish games are serious business at the Powell house.
Tom attended the University of Illinois where he studied Broadcast Journalism. He received a scholarship for excellence in news writing. Tom learned the ropes of the broadcast business at WICD-TV in Champaign during his college days.
The day after graduation, Tom traveled to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for his first professional broadcasting job at KSFY-TV. His next move took him to WREG in Memphis, TN, where he spent eight years as the lead reporter and primary fill-in anchor for the top rated newscast in the market. In Memphis, Tom covered everything from a nasty wind storm dubbed "Hurricane Elvis" to the Prime Minister of Japan's visit to Graceland. He pounded the pavement daily covering breaking news and digging up stories on a variety of issues. Tom also helped the station develop and expand its presence in the world of social media.
You can see Tom each night as he anchors the FOX 28 News at 10 with Traci Capellman. You can also follow him on Twitter @TomP_FOX28 where he writes about the news and what's news to him.
