UPDATE: Fire destroys buildings at Park Jefferson Apartments in South Bend

A huge fire destroys several apartments at Park Jefferson Apartments in South Bend. The call came in around 6:15 Friday morning by a Mishawaka police officer. The fire was under control before 8am. A cause of the fire is still unknown.

Jefferson Avenue was closed to traffic while crews continued to investigate.  The road reopened to traffic around noon on Friday.

The eastern side of the property is where the fire broke out. Wind is causing the fire to spread to other buildings. Crews are working on a maneuver to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings. Some residents were evacuated.

Park Jefferson Apartments has a history of fires. Fire officials say a firewalls were not built all the way to the attic, and this causes a fire to spread much faster.
