NIPSCO Announces Environmental Remediation Project

Starting on February 6, people near Pennsylvania Avenue in South Bend may start smelling something they are not used to.

NIPSCO announced it will remove soil from the southwest portion of its Pennsylvania Avenue operating facility as part an environmental remediation project. The announcement comes after a series of investigations found coal tar under the property.

"The studies determined that the risk to public health is low because impacted areas are under ground and the City's water supply is not affected," said NIPSCO Public Affairs Manager Angie Nelson, "but these environmental impacts need to be addressed to make sure the property remains safe to use for the long term."

NIPSCO says this project will take about six weeks to complete. During that time people nearby may smell something like roofing tar or moth balls. NIPSCO does not anticipate this project to have any other offsite impacts and the air will be monitored while this work is going on.
