A new exhibit at the South Bend Museum of Art shows off some of the areas best young artists.
The 2012 Scholastic Art Awards for Northwest Indiana and Southwest Lower Michigan is now open, and it showcases nearly 500 pieces of artwork from students in grades 7 through 12.
From there, the artists will move on to a national competition in New York. This year marks the 89th anniversary of the Scholastic Art Awards. The Awards gives students a chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published.
For the area organizer, the recognition alone is important for these young artists. "I think the skills that it takes to work with art and be creative you can't test, you can't get a hard score of. It's an ability to problem solve because there's not one right answer and I think that's so important for life learning," says Cheryl Phelan with the award's Teacher Advisory Board.
The exhibit will be on display at the South Bend Museum of Art in the Warner Gallery through March 3rd.
