Sunday at the Elkhart Environmental
Center people learned how
to make maple syrup from trees in their own yard. Attendees were shown how to identify a maple
tree and how to get the sap out of the tree.
They were also taught how to turn that sap into syrup from Vic
Riemenschneider who grew up on an Ohio
farm. He says his family made maple
syrup every year from trees on their property and he wants others to enjoy the
same convenience. "It only takes one tree and you can make a couple
quarts of syrup from a single tree so if you have a font yard tree or a
backyard tree you can easily make a delicious product," said Riemenschneider.
Riemenschneider also cautioned
people about turning the sap into syrup.
He warned of burning the syrup and causing the wall paper in your
kitchen to peel cause of the steam.
