Mayor Buttigieg attends vigil for shooting victim, says city will not tolerate senseless violence

It was an intimate gathering of friends and strangers. There to honor and pray for Chris Simril, the South Bend Washington senior who was gunned down at Rum village Park on February 26th. In attendance, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and he made it clear that South Bend will not tolerate senseless violence.

"I was with the young man the day that he was killed actually, speaking to the Upward Bound program that he's a participate in. But more than that I'm here to show that the city cares, the entire city is concerned." Buttigieg said.

Mayor Buttigieg says we need to take our streets back.

"This kind of violence is obviously not something that any of us can accept. We need to keep our eyes on the problem and keep looking for solutions." Buttigieg said.

The mayor says that comes with confronting issues far early, educating our youth that there are more options than crime out there.

"Well there's no magic wands here, no way to get us to a perfect society but we can't tolerate this kind of violence." Buttigieg said.

It's that kind of violence that ended Chris Simril's life so early. And tonight police are still searching for suspects in his death. Anyone with any information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 288-STOP.
