A woman is dead after a car ran into a home in South Bend early Friday morning. The car hit a home on the southwest corner of Twyckenham and Corby St shortly before 1:30am.
Witnesses told police they saw two cars speeding side by side before the crash. When they turned at the intersection, the outside car hit a fire hydrant and then crashed into the home at the living room. Police say 57-year-old Barbara Knapp was sleeping on her couch when the crash happened. She was pronounced dead at the scene. One of Knapp's two dogs was also killed in the crash.
The cars driver, 23-year-old Erica McCaffrey, and a passenger in the vehicle were not severely injured. The female driver was arrested on a DWI charge. Her male passenger told police they were visiting from Wisconsin.
Police continue to investigate.
