Charges have been filed against a woman police say hit a South Bend house with a car early Friday, killing the woman inside.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office says 3 charges were filed against Erica McCaffery on Saturday, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated, Operating a Motor Vehicle With an Alcohol Concentration of .08 or more grams of Alcohol in the breath, and Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated Resulting in Death of Another Person.
Police believe McCaffery was driving at a high rate of speed trying to make a turn from Corby Street to Twyckenham Drive. Her car ended up in the home of 56-year-old Barbara Knapp. According to court documents, Knapp was pronounced dead at the scene. Documents say she died of multiple blunt force traumas.
McCaffery and another person in the vehicle were taken to the hospital. According to court documents, McCaffery told police she had been drinking at her brother's apartment. According to the documents, a portable breath test done approximately 2 hours after the crash showed McCaffery had a blood alcohol level of .066. Police estimate her blood alcohol ranged from .08 to .09 at the time of the accident. A blood sample was also taken, which is now being analyzed.
According to the documents, the other person in the vehicle told police he was a front seat passenger, but doesn't remember much about the crash. That person has not been charged.
