GRUNDY CENTER (KWWL) -

An eastern Iowa doctor is facing some unusual, but serious charges.

Dr. Frank Lamp of Grundy Center is charged with nine counts of operating a substance abuse treatment program without a license.

Dr. Lamp was prescribing methadone to patients, something he was told not to do, according to court records.

Methadone is a narcotic used as a pain killer. It can also be used to wean addicts off of heroin and other highly addictive drugs.

Dr. Lamp was told once not to prescribe the drug by the Iowa State Attorney General, but he continued to do so, according to records.

According to court documents, the Iowa Department of Public Health became aware of Dr. Lamp's activities after a registered methadone clinic, Cedar Valley Recovery Services in Cedar Falls, noticed patients were dropping out of their program and going to Dr. Lamp.

Dr. Lamp was notified that what he was doing was illegal and he said he would stop, according to records.

In court documents provided by the Grundy County Attorney's Office it says, "Following this notification, however, the department continued to receive information from Cedar Valley Recovery Services that they believed Dr. Lamp was continuing to prescribe to some of the patients identified in the original investigation."

It was discovered Lamp had prescribed the drug nine more times.

While Dr. Lamp has his own practice, he has also worked at Grundy County Memorial Hospital.

The hospital released a statement saying, "Dr. Lamp has staffed the hospital's emergency department on a rotating basis in the past, and has now been placed on leave."

According to hospital officials, none of the prescriptions were written while Dr. Lamp was on duty at the emergency room.

Dr. Lamp did not return messages to his office in Grundy Center.
